Dubrovnik car hire: what do excess, deposit and desk extras mean?
Updated October 9, 2026 · 5 min read
The cheapest displayed Dubrovnik rental is not automatically the cheapest contract. For most drivers, the decisive checks are the excess, the card deposit, what the included CDW excludes, the fuel policy and permission for any border crossing. Read those before payment, then compare the written voucher with the desk contract. Compare Dubrovnik car-hire terms; do not choose solely from the daily headline.
Excess and deposit are different
The excess is the amount for which the renter may remain liable under the damage cover, subject to the contract. The deposit is money the supplier blocks or takes as security. They may be related, but they are not interchangeable. A low rental price can come with an excess or deposit that does not suit the available limit on your card.
No single honest figure applies across Dubrovnik suppliers. Check the vehicle-specific rental conditions for the exact amount, accepted card type, cardholder name and required available credit. A debit card may not be treated like a credit card. If the booking driver cannot present the required card, a prepaid reservation can still fail at collection.
What CDW does — and does not — tell you
CDW limits certain damage liability according to the rental contract; it is not a promise that every scratch, tyre, glass item, underside incident or misuse is covered. “Full protection” sold by a comparison service may reimburse eligible costs after the supplier charges you, whereas a waiver sold at the desk may change what the supplier charges in the first place. Read the claim process and exclusions rather than treating the labels as identical.
Photograph the car at collection and return, including wheels and existing marks, and keep the condition documents. That is evidence, not a substitute for following the reporting procedure in the contract.
Desk extras that deserve an explicit answer
Fuel policy should say what level you receive and must return. “Full to full” still requires keeping the refuelling receipt and returning at the agreed level. An additional driver, a young-driver condition, child seats, late collection or returning outside opening hours may each have separate terms. The supplier sets its own minimum age and licence-history rules, so check them on the booking page rather than assuming a Croatia-wide threshold.
Dubrovnik also raises a local question: will you cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina or Montenegro? Ask for written cross-border permission and any required documentation. Do not infer permission because the destination is a popular day trip. The same caution applies to ferries and one-way returns; both must appear in the conditions if your route needs them.
What to verify before pressing “book”
Match the driver’s name to the payment card, inspect the deposit requirement, read the excess and exclusions, choose a workable fuel policy and add only the drivers who will actually drive. Save the voucher offline because a desk discussion is easier when the agreed terms are in front of you.

A slightly higher transparent rate is a better recommendation than a low price whose collection conditions your card cannot meet.
