Blue Cave from Dubrovnik: what the boat trips actually include
Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read
Dubrovnik’s Blue Cave is on Koločep, not beside the Old Town. Most trips therefore combine it with the nearby Green Caves, Šunj Beach on Lopud or other Elaphiti swimming stops. The popular Blue and Green Caves trip with Šunj Beach, drinks and snorkelling lasts about 4 hours and currently starts at €49 per person.
What happens at the cave
The blue effect comes from sunlight entering through the water. It changes with cloud, sea conditions and time of day, so no operator can guarantee the colour shown in promotional photographs. On many departures you enter the water and swim into the cave rather than remain aboard. If swimming in open water or through a low entrance feels uncomfortable, ask about the exact visit before booking.
Wind and swell control the route. A skipper may shorten a swim stop, substitute a sheltered bay or cancel when entering would be unsafe. That is sensible seamanship, not a missing attraction. The official regional tourism site also identifies Koločep’s Blue Cave for its light effects.
Speedboat or larger boat?
A speedboat covers more coastline in half a day and usually carries a smaller group, but the ride is firmer and shade and toilets vary. A larger boat is steadier and may offer more space, yet it cannot approach every entrance in the same way. Check the vessel, boarding arrangement, shade, toilet, included drinks and snorkelling equipment on the selected booking option.
Bring swimwear, a towel and sun protection that will not blow away. Water shoes help on rocky entries, but they do not replace confident swimming. Operators set their own minimum ages and may change them by boat or weather, so use the booking page rather than assuming one rule applies to every departure.

The honest choice
Book this trip for swimming and a fast view of several coastal spots, not for a long island visit. Choose an Elaphiti Islands cruise if lunch, villages and time ashore matter more. If rough water makes you anxious, keep the day flexible and confirm the sea conditions with the operator.
