Lokrum Island from Dubrovnik: ferry, swimming and how long to stay

Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read

Green Lokrum Island seen across calm water from Dubrovnik’s old harbour

Lokrum is close enough for a half-day but varied enough to reward a slower visit. The island is a protected forest reserve with paths, gardens, monastery remains, rocky bathing places and the small saltwater lake known as the Dead Sea. It is not a conventional beach island and there are no cars to shorten the walking.

Ferry and admission

The official ferry leaves from Dubrovnik’s Old City harbour. The reserve’s ticket includes the return boat and admission; arriving by water taxi or private boat does not remove the admission charge. Prices, first and last departures vary, so check the official Lokrum website on the day. Boats do not operate in unsuitable weather.

Never plan around the last return without checking it at the harbour. A useful half-day allows time for the monastery area, shaded woodland and one swim. Two hours can cover a brisk circuit; three to four hours feels less rushed if you stop by the water. A full day makes sense for travellers who want repeated swims and a slow picnic, not because the island has a long checklist of sights.

Swimming and walking

Most access to the sea is from rock platforms and ladders. Water shoes can improve grip, while swell can make an otherwise attractive place unsuitable. The Dead Sea is more enclosed, but conditions and access still deserve attention. There are peacocks on the island; admire them without feeding or crowding them.

Paths include uneven stone and gradients. Travellers with limited mobility should ask the reserve about current access rather than assuming a short boat crossing means an easy visit. Carry water and take rubbish away from picnic spots.

Lokrum also appears on longer Game of Thrones tours with the Iron Throne, but not every option includes the island boat or reserve admission. Check the exact Lokrum option or compare island trips.

Independent visit or tour?

Go independently for swimming, gardens and control over your return time. Choose a themed tour if filming locations and commentary are the purpose of the visit. If you mainly want beaches and several villages, the longer Elaphiti cruise is the better match.
